The Proposal
It was May 26, 2008, Memorial Day, and Tony had just completed building our patio with my Dad. They had been working on the project for several months and it was exciting to finally have it finished. The guys were packing up my Dad’s truck, when Tony casually asked “Hey Greg, would it be OK with you if I proposed to Andrea?” Somewhat surprised, my Dad paused for a second and replied, “It’s fine with me, but the ultimate decision is hers…good luck.”While the guys were working outside, I was inside organizing my belongings because I had just moved into our town home earlier that weekend. The “living in sin” topic was slightly sensitive, but our parents claimed that the choice was ours to make. After my Dad left, Tony cleaned up because we had plans to go over to my parent’s house that afternoon for a Memorial Day barbeque. As we were walking out the door, Tony stopped me in our kitchen and paused for a moment. He started talking about me moving in, and how much he loves me, etc. Suddenly, he reaches in his pocket and pulls out a small jewelry box. He continued professing his love, however I could not process what he was saying because my thoughts were focused on what I assumed was about to happen. He slowly opened the box, and inside was a gorgeous white gold, princess cut, sparkling diamond ring! I was so surprised, all I can remember saying is, “Are you for real?!” Tony laughed and said sarcastically, “No…this is just practice…” I laughed, then cried, and eventually said “YES!”
I was shaking uncontrollably, and I didn’t even know that it was possible to feel so many mixed emotions at one moment. Time seemed to stop, every action seemed slow and deliberate, and the feelings that were felt are indescribable. Tony smiled, looking relieved and said, “I’m glad that’s over with.” We laughed as we walked out the door thinking, now we’ll REALLY have something to celebrate for Memorial Day!
