How We Met
Tony and I met through mutual friends and siblings Amy and Adam Raymond. Amy and I have been friends since we were eight-years-old at Peppertree Elementary School. Adam and Tony met in college at the University of La Verne. It was Amy’s 19th birthday and she was having a party at her apartment in San Bernardino, near Cal State where she was attending college. I was of course invited, and Adam thought it would be entertaining to bring his older, college friends and fraternity brothers to hit on Amy’s friends. That’s basically what happened with Tony and me. We began talking and after several beverages, I casually asked if I could kiss him. He replied, “No, I want to take you out on a date first.” Shocked and with my ego slightly bruised, I gave him my number and said, “Call me.”He called a few days later. I told him that I was not available because I was spending the weekend with my brother, who was home from Santa Barbara. After a short and uncomfortable exchange of words, he hung up and did not attempt to call me again. I was curious about this, but I figured that I had appeared not interested by politely rejecting him.
About one year later, I was at Amy’s parents’ house celebrating another friend’s birthday when I discovered Tony would be coming over later after he got off work. I felt sick and anxious about his anticipated arrival. I wasn’t sure if my feelings were because of guilt or excitement. When he arrived there were some awkward moments, but it was quickly dispersed by my silly flirtation. We had an awesome time reconnecting while I diffused any remarks related to blowing him off initially. At the end of the evening, it was decided that he would give ME his number this time so as to diminish rejection once again. Within a day or two I called him. We have been together now for five years. We cannot wait to get married and spend the rest of our lives together.
